National Apprenticeship Week — a catch-up with our apprentice, Ruby
This week is National Apprenticeship Week 2025, and it is a chance to look at the value of apprenticeships and the opportunities they create. Investing in people is at the heart of what we do, and our first apprentice, Ruby Bache-Williams, is a fantastic example of how hands-on experience and learning can shape a bright future.
Ruby joined Treveth as an Apprentice Business Administrator in 2023 and has since gained invaluable experience working across different areas of Treveth. From supporting teams with essential admin to balancing her studies at Truro College, Ruby has embraced the apprenticeship journey with enthusiasm, and we’ve loved having her here!
We caught up with Ruby to hear about her experience so far, what she’s learned, and her advice for others considering an apprenticeship.
Hi Ruby! Happy National Apprenticeship Week! What has been the most rewarding aspect of your apprenticeship at Treveth so far?
It has been very satisfying and insightful having the opportunity to learn directly from skilled professionals and gain hands-on experience in a field that I previously had very little knowledge of. I have been able to apply what I’ve learned in real-world situations. This has not only deepened my understanding of the housing sector but also boosted my confidence in my abilities.
Can you tell us more about the variety of tasks you’ve worked on?
As a business administration apprentice, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks, from managing internal and external communications, scheduling meetings, providing project support and handling data entry. I’ve also gained experience in customer service and learned how Treveth’s different departments work together, which has helped me develop a well-rounded skill set.
What’s been your favourite project or responsibility?
My favourite responsibility as a business administration apprentice has been helping to organise events and meetings. I’ve really enjoyed coordinating the details, ensuring everything runs smoothly, and seeing the positive outcomes. It’s been a great way to develop my organisational and communication skills.
How has Treveth supported you in balancing work and your college studies?
Treveth has been really supportive. They ensure that my workload is manageable, allow me time to focus on coursework and provide guidance when needed. Their flexibility and encouragement has made it much easier to stay on top of both.
How do you feel your skills have developed since starting the apprenticeship? What areas do you feel most confident in now compared to when you first started?
Since starting my apprenticeship, my skills have developed significantly. I’ve become much more confident in handling a variety of tasks like scheduling, data entry and taking incoming calls. I now feel more assured when working with all of Treveth’s different teams to help solve problems and contribute to the team effectively.
Has there been a specific mentor or team member who has particularly helped you along the way? How has their guidance impacted your apprenticeship?
My line manager Beth has been a fantastic mentor throughout my apprenticeship. She is extremely patient and is genuinely invested in my growth. She has provided guidance and constructive feedback, which has created a supportive environment where I feel comfortable asking questions. Equally, Pauline, our Rentals Coordinator, has taken me under her wing. She has inspired me to be more confident and has helped me to navigate challenges while encouraging independence and critical thinking.
What’s one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as an apprentice, and how did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as an apprentice is building confidence in a professional environment. At first, I felt nervous about making mistakes, but by asking questions, staying open to feedback and reminding myself that learning is part of the process, I’ve grown more self-assured in my abilities. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the time and support of everyone at Treveth.
How has working at a company with a profit with purpose ethos and a commitment to the local community influenced your experience and career aspirations?
Treveth meets that description perfectly. Working with Treveth has shown me how businesses can create real positive change while continuing to thrive. It has made my apprenticeship experience especially worthwhile as it has motivated me to approach my work with a strong sense of responsibility and community impact in mind. Seeing the positive impact first-hand has driven me to seek opportunities that align with both my values and career aspirations.
What does it mean to you personally to be part of a company that prioritises Cornwall and local people?
As a local person, being part of Treveth makes my work feel more meaningful. It has given me a deeper understanding of the efforts being made to support local growth and sustainability. Not only are Treveth actively working to tackle the housing crisis by developing high-quality homes designed for local people, but their commitment also to employing and working with local people and businesses helps strengthen the county and its local communities. On top of that, Treveth are proud to be a B Corp certified company creating sustainable communities, ensuring that Cornwall remains a place where residents can live and thrive.
What advice would you give to other young people considering an apprenticeship?
Go for it! It’s a great way to gain practical experience, learn from subject matter experts, and develop skills that will set you up for a successful career.
What would you say to others who might be considering an apprenticeship but are unsure about it?
I’d say don’t be afraid to give it a try! It can open doors to exciting career opportunities, and you can always reach out to employers, training providers and past or present apprentices to learn more.
Finally, how long is left of your apprenticeship and what are your plans after?
I am very pleased to have completed my End Point Assessments at the end of January 2025, and I received my Certificate of Achievement on at the beginning of this month with a Distinction grade. I now hope to become a permanent member of the Treveth team and continue my professional development by learning new skills.
